A change in the weather brings on a change in our moods and our taste, so spice it up and embrace the new season!
As we transition from summer to autumn we loose those long, lazy late nights, followed by the early sunshine awakening us each morning. We start to face grey overcast mornings and a lack of motivation, followed by colder, darker nights. Entertaining inside starts to take reign but sometimes we lack new ideas.
Why not make the transition easier and tastier with a delicious wine cocktail? Autumnal wines are characteristically fresh and crisp with a hint of warm flavor. Combining your favourite Autumn wines with fresh fruits and spices will give you a cool-weather cocktail you can sip right on into Winter. Spice up your darker mood and darker, Autumn life with a twist on the standard end-of-the-day glass of wine.
Wine cocktails are a fast and simple way to entertain friends who stop by unexpectedly or to celebrate any small victory with your family after work. They combine your favorite seasonal wines with other autumnal flavors and give you that warmth your soul needs as the leaves start to fall.
The most popular choices for Autumn wines include the more complex and spicy Pinot Noirs or a sweet or dry Riesling. Why not try the following recipe using a white Pinot Gris or Riesling for a spin on the standard mulled red wine? Let us know how it goes.
- 1 lemon
- 750 ml white wine
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 ginger “thumb” (peeled and sliced into rounds)
- 8 whole cloves
- 6 star anise (pods)
- 1/2 tsp black peppercorns
Using your peeler, zest the lemon.
In saucepan, bring the zest and remaining ingredients to a simmer over medium.
Remove from heat, cover and let steep for 10 minutes.
