The land selected for the Bald Hills Vineyard was subdivided from a large hilly sheep station near the old gold-mining township called Bannockburn. Once the rowdy and boisterous scene of throngs of miners of all caste and creed, the Bannockburn of today paints a quiet picture of rural order and tranquility. Today's gold, wine, replaces the gleaming mineral so sought after years before. Blair and Estelle Hunt, passionate owners of Bald Hills, live at the property. Their home is sited almost in the very centre of the vineyard where it is surrounded by trees, lawns and herb and perennial gardens and the wider vista of rocky snowy hills. |
Our mission at Bald Hills is to make wines that reflect the nature and aspect of Bald Hills’ unique Bannockburn vineyard site. Our wines are made using only our own estate grown fruit so every finished wine accurately represents the growing season and the particular nuances that season gave to the grapes. As we continue to learn about and understand our land, we can see recurring themes in our wines from year to year. From the striking, clean citrus character of our “Last Light” Riesling to the haunting and spicy notes of our Pinot Noir. Add to this the subtleties of the season and you have wines which are distinctive and unique to this little patch of earth. |

Grant Taylor is a winemaker with a succession of international trophies and gold medals to his name. He has worked over 40 vintages including New Zealand, California, France, Oregon and Australia. "We approached Grant Taylor to make our wine for us in 1999. He questioned our goals, asked what we wanted to achieve with our wines and viewed the site we had chosen. After careful deliberation and consideration of all our common interests, this unflappable, dedicated and thoroughly charming man consented to make our wine." You can imagine the Hunts' delight. After all, Grant Taylor is one of New Zealand's best. His beautifully crafted wines have received the highest praise throughout the world. His preference is for wines from single vineyard sites and he strives to make wines which are a true expression of the "terroir" of that site rather than blends from various areas. |
