Pigeon Rocks Central Otago Pinot Gris 2014
This Pinot Gris is our first since 2010. Growing ever popular, our 2014 Central Otago Pinot Gris is fragrant, fruity with a touch of spice. The perfect summer wine.
The Bald Hills Pinot Gris being dry but fruity and flavoursome lends itself beautifully to pairing with spicy foods .
We recommend that you try it with Asian-style foods such as spicy pork spare ribs or a San Choy Bao. It is also delicious simply chilled, then sipped while sitting in the garden with the sun on your back and nibbling on julienned vegetables dipped in sour cream and dukkah.
Comments from Colin Ford
Light straw in colour; no hint of brass.
The intensity of the nose is impressive showing citrus, melon-rind, mango and a hint of toasted nuts.
The palate exhibits excellent concentration of flavour; deep and intense with notes of apple, pear and melon-rind. It's very pure! Just off-dry, there's emphasis on the lovely texture, rather than on aromatics, showing a true understanding of the variety. Firm and almost waxy-chewy with superb length of finish. A top-class example of a New Zealand Pinot Gris.
Winemaking and Viticulture
The Pigeon Rocks Central Otago Pinot Gris fruit was hand harvested on 15 April 2014 at 22.9 brix and was whole bunch pressed to tank. The juice was inoculated with a selected wine yeast and fermented in a stainless steel tank to retain the varietal/ fruity characteristics. The fermentation was stopped retaining a touch of residual sugar.
Pale straw with clear hues. Aromas of ripe pears and peach with some spice and floral notes on the nose. Flavours of pear, peach and spice show on the palate along with a hint of butterscotch. A generous, mouth filling wine, which is textural and concentrated on the mid palate and has a long lingering finish. - Peter Bartle, Winemaker
